Taxi Language (2007): The secret language of hailing a cab in Johannesburg With limited public transport in Johannesburg, residents rely on minibus taxis. But don't expect them to stop for you unless you have an in-depth knowledge of taxi sign language. On any street corner in the townships of Johannesburg, you'll see people gesticulating widely. "Pointing your finger up means you want to go to the city", explains one woman. "If you want to go to the station you have to move your arms like a train". But to other drivers, Johannesburg's 50,000 private taxis are the bane of the city. "They suck", states one woman. "They're rude and don't obey the traffic rules". JOHANNESBURG (12/01/12) A taxi driver was dragged into a puddle and ordered to swim because he laughed at a police officer. A woman was pepper-sprayed and beaten with a stick because she wanted to close her shop. And a human rights worker had his phone confiscated and was arrested for taking photographs of a soldier beating a shopkeeper with the butt of his R4 assault rifle. Hundreds of South African taxi drivers blocked the main highway to Africa's busiest airport, O.R. Tambo International, protesting against ride-hailing company Uber. The protest by drivers with metered cabs caused very serious traffic jams on the two highways near the Airport. Uber Technologies Inc's service has triggered protests by taxi drivers from London to Hungary and New Delhi. It has overturned traditional business models that require professional drivers to pay steep licensing fees to drive cabs. Meanwhile Uber drivers also held protest outside the Uber headquarters in Johannesburg. They accuse the company of not protecting them. Uber has attracted more than 500,000 users and 4,000 drivers across South Africa since its launch...

Travel video about destination Johannesburg in South Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa's tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city's narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa's most exquisite landmarks. It contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the citys' past surface mining that gave rise to the country's massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as that of the history of Africa's native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. Gold Re...

December 21, 2012 We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice. If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi. If you're staying at the Garden Court...

"I was in Africa for the first time," says Mykki Blanco. "I am 31 years old, African American, and there I was... on the continent in which civilisation as we know it was born, the land which birthed my race, for the very first time." Out Of This World, a new i-D documentary series, journeys with American rapper and activist Mykki Blanco as he explores queer culture in Johannesburg. Captured intimately in an experimental hybrid-documentary by director Matt Lambert, Mykki meets boundary pushing artists Umilio and FAKA, designer Rich Mnisi and Bradley and Nkulsey, a model and dancer of the 'Born Free' generation - all using their platforms to give a voice to issues surrounding the politics of their sexuality, gender, identity and humanity. December 2006 'Surfing' on top of speeding trains is the ultimate adrenaline experience for South Africa's disillusioned youth. It's illegal, dangerous and has already killed hundreds. "I always wanted to be a stuntman", explains 'Bitch Nigga'. He doesn't just surf trains. He ducks bridges, does push ups and has come up with his own entertainment routine, performed from the top of a racing train. Most of the surfers come from broken homes. They spend their days drinking, smoking and teaching each other the latest train surfing techniques.

What a beautiful and remote part of the World. Travelling from South Africa to Malawi/Mozambique, I get to see some beautiful scenery and see what peoples lives are like in one of the poorest regions of the continent. This was a two-leg trip from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Likoma Island (Malawi) via Lilongwe (Malawi). The first leg was in a South African Airways Airbus A320 to Lilongwe. This followed by a 1h flight from Lilongwe to Likoma Island, Lake Malawi.

This was a idea i had whilst going to meet another activist in Johannesburg central business district. As some of you may remember jhb, it has changed a load. i was born in jhb and lived in Hillbrow from age 0 until about 5 years old! People who deny any kind of economic inequality can watch this and see a my taxi(minibus) drove from Randburg through Craighall park, Hyde Park and Rosebank over the highway and into Johannesburg, the difference is clear! As you will see there are many buildings that can be used to provide suitable housing to homeless people, even for orphanages. These buildings can also be renovated in order to incorporate them into food growing warehouses!!! As there years go by and more people flock to the cities for employment, so that money can be sent to loved ones, in ...
